Huang Yao Tang
The Belgian artist Huang Yao-Tang was born in 1948 in Penghu, Taiwan, and grew up in Chiayi. He lives and works in Brussels as an architect and artist. Influenced by arte provera and art brut, Huang developed his style of abstract painting with an emphasis on the role of texture and material in his compositions. He also occasionally uses bold brush strokes to evoke the spirit of calligraphy. His subject matters cross meditative Zen philosophy, street art, and fragments of urban life. Huang is fascinated by the diverse ethnic groups of Southeast Asia and their cultural heritage, and is gravely concerned about the indigenous tribal people in Taiwan, whose languages and culture is rapidly disappearing.
